OVERVIEW

Tsuwano is a small rural town that has remarkably succeeded in preserving so much of Japan’s ancient traditions and historical landscapes until today.

A great symbol of this is the “Hyakkeizu: One Hundred Sceneries of Tsuwano from the Edo period”, designated as Japan’s National Heritage, containing 100 paintings of the Tsuwano feudal domain about 160 years ago.

In this 3 hour electric bike cycling tour, we will discover Tsuwano by plunging into the world of the 100 Sceneries.

This is Yu-na’s signature tour that we recommend as the first tour that visitors should experience when they visit Tsuwano.

Yui

Born in Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. I fell in love with Tsuwano at first sight when I happened to be on Yu-na’s monitor tour. In March, just before I started, I turned down the job I had been offered by a company in Tokyo and decided to move to Tsuwano Town as a member of the Regional Revitalization Cooperation Volunteers. I love Hello! Project idol and comedian Lalande & A. Masso!

  • Hyakkeizu, the Sceneries of Tsuwano “Preserving Time” from Edo Period

The key theme of this cycling tour is the “Hyakkeizu: One Hundred Sceneries of Tsuwano from the Edo Period,” designated as Japan’s National Heritage in 2015. These 100 paintings depict everyday scenes of Tsuwano domain about 160 years ago.

It is fascinating to discover how much of the historical landscapes, events, festivities, traditions and customs from the Hyakkeizu have been preserved in Tsuwano today.

Hence the name of this tour that portrays what these 100 paintings have managed to preserve ; not “sceneries” but “time”.

  • This is the scenery that inspired me to move to Tsuwano.

A 10 minute bicycle ride from the center of Tsuwano takes us to a scenic area in the valley, where we can enjoy not only the stories of the 100 paintings, but also the pristine natural landscape that has remained unchanged for centuries.

For the locals it is just an ordinary scene from their daily lives. But for others, it becomes a special place that somehow evokes a sense of nostalgia.

There are many people who move to Tsuwano, and this scenery is said to have been a deciding factor for many of them.

  • This unique tour was created by Sokoiko! which was nominated 3rd on TripAdvisor’s “Travelers’ Choice – Best of the Best Things to Do in Japan” in 2022.

Famous for offering unusual tours not listed in typical guidebooks, this cycling tour reveals the many reasons why Sokoiko! fell in love with Tsuwano.
