  • The idea for the tea terrace began with a simple thought: “It would be wonderful to enjoy tea here.”

During a meeting with Shusuien, Yu-na and their team wondered if there was a place where they could enjoy tea outdoors. They explored the area and noticed that in front of Shusuien’s store was a tea field with a stunning view of Mount Aono, which is designated as Japan’s Natural Monument and an important symbol of Tsuwano.

At the base of Mount Aono is the Rokugo district, known for its tea fields and rhododendron flowers. Each May, this area attracts many visitors who come to see the vibrant display of 100 carp streamers. The beauty of the changing seasons here is a local treasure, lovingly preserved by the community.

While admiring the scene, someone remarked, “It would be wonderful if we could enjoy tea in this tea field…” To their surprise, just a few months later, the tea terrace was completed. In the excitement of the moment, it ended up being twice as large as originally planned. The tea terrace was created to fully embrace the local scenery, even if it meant taking some space from the cherished tea field.

  • Tsuwano is renowned for its philosophy of “medicine and food as one,” a tradition deeply rooted in its practice of mamecha herbal teas.

Blessed with natural resources such as the Takatsu River, often recognized as “The Clearest River in Japan,” and the mountains of the Chugoku range, Tsuwano’s people have long embraced a healthy lifestyle through seasonal local foods. This philosophy, known as Ishoku Dogen, emphasizes using daily meals for illness prevention and treatment. Recently, this approach has gained significant attention, with even a local restaurant dedicated to the concept of “food as medicine and the source of health.”

A prime example of this tradition is the herbal tea mamecha, produced at Shusuien. Mamecha is made from a wild bean plant in the legume family, celebrated for its fragrant aroma and mild flavor. While green tea is believed to have originated in China, mamecha has been growing naturally in this area since ancient times. The term “mamecha” comes from the Tsuwano dialect, where “mame-naru” means “to become healthy.” Experience the benefits of this nourishing, caffeine-free Japanese herbal tea, loved by the people of Tsuwano for its rich nutrients and wellness-boosting qualities.
